The practice of functional neurology is based on the observable phenomenon of neural plasticity – the potential for the nervous system to remodel and reorganize itself, particularly after injury.
The brain is not simply a complicated computer. It does not have a fixed organization of regions and roles, as was traditionally thought. An emerging body of evidence throughout the 20th century proved quite the opposite. As it turns out, if region “A” of the brain sustains an injury and can no longer function properly, differently-located region “B” could assume the functional load originally assigned to region “A”.
Licensed doctoral practitioners of functional neurology (MDs, DOs, and DCs) are specialists in encouraging a patient’s nervous system through the process of positive neural plasticity. This approach is typically noninvasive, drug-free, and focuses on sensory-based active rehabilitation of the nervous system.
Typical therapy approaches in a functional neurology office include a combination of ocular and vestibular rehabilitation, physical therapy, cold laser, electrical stimulation, spinal manipulation, functional medicine, oxygen therapy, acupuncture/dry needling, and nutritional counsel. While other practitioners may use many of these same tools, a functional neurologist will utilize them with the intent of brain or nervous system healing to overcome deeper injuries that have not responded to other forms of care.
At Tampa Bay Functional Neurology, we pride ourselves on knowing our patients well. Our minimum time per-patient is 30 minutes for treatment visits, and 2 hours for new patient examinations. You will never feel rushed out of our office. As a result, you will benefit from a thorough diagnosis, answers to your questions, and effective care.
Dr. Devin Radford’s journey in healthcare began with his undergraduate studies at the University of South Florida, followed by earning his doctoral degree from the National University of Health Sciences College of Chiropractic Medicine. He then completed a rigorous three-year postdoctoral specialty in Clinical Neurology at the Carrick Institute for Clinical Neuroscience and Rehabilitation. Dr. Radford is board-certified with the American Chiropractic Neurology Board and eligible for fellowship with the American College of Functional Neurology
Dr. Radford further honed his skills during a clinical physician internship under the mentorship of Dr. Robert Koser, former clinical triage director at the renowned Laser Spine Institute. This mentorship solidified Dr. Radford’s commitment to patient-centered care, emphasizing conservative and interdisciplinary approaches. He actively collaborates with specialists in orthopedics, pain medicine, imaging, and neurosurgery to ensure comprehensive care and optimal patient outcomes.
Dr. Radford became interested in the field of neurology as a patient himself. As a teenager, he developed mild neurologic symptoms and presented to his in-network neurologist. After a 3-minute exam, he was given a prescription and told by the doctor that for the rest of his life, he would need to take the medication each day that he did not want to have the symptoms.
That was an unsatisfactory experience and an incomplete answer for Dr. Radford. He felt that he as a patient deserved more. Furthermore, after a two week trial, he would also learn that the medication came with considerable side effects that were nearly as severe as his original complaint. It was only after exposure to the subspecialty of functional neurology that he experienced considerable and lasting relief.
Now as a neurologic provider himself, Dr. Radford strives to arm each patient with the knowledge they need, the time and 1st-class treatment they deserve, and the outcomes they’ve hoped for.
Dr. Radford is a board-certified Chiropractic Neurologist and a board-certified Chiropractic Physician via the Florida Department of Health. He holds accompanying board certifications in physiotherapy, acupuncture, and Florida laws governing practice. He is licensed as a physician of the state to evaluate and diagnose all conditions and to treat them conservatively according to the statutes put forth by the state. Additionally, Dr. Radford has completed more than 500 postdoctoral hours in the field of clinical neurology, with concentration in head pain, brain injury, and functional rehabilitation.
We are a direct-to-patient cash practice because we believe this model results in the best outcomes for patients and their providers. We accept cash, credit/debit cards, and FSA/HSA cards. Additionally, in the event that you would like to submit your expenses to your insurance company for reimbursement, we are happy to provide you with a detailed superbill.
Welcome to Tampa Bay Functional Neurology! You can expect a comprehensive interview and examination to find root causes of pain, as well as a host of innovative, noninvasive treatment options.
Dr. Radford’s patients often note that their initial visit is “the most thorough exam” they’ve ever received from a medical professional. That’s the standard we strive for with each patient. We will conduct a deep dive into your health history to identify root causes of injury. Treatment will follow suit, with tailormade treatment plans designed exclusively for the individual patient.
Yes, bring your kids to your appointment! Tampa Bay Functional Neurology is family practice. With respect to treatment, we are a principally adult clinic, but minors are evaluated on a case-by-case basis to see if we are an appropriate fit for care and if we can provide value to your family.
Each patient is different, and the only true way to determine whether we are the ideal fit for you is to do a comprehensive exam and consultation with the doctor. With that said, we are positioned to treat the following conditions expediently:
…furthermore, TBFN is not in the business of wasting your time or money. If the doctor determines that you are not a good candidate for care with the practice, or you reach a plateau after a trial of care, the doctor will refer you to another provider for additional treatment.
The vast majority of patients experience minimal to no pain with spinal manipulation. Occasionally, manipulation can be accompanied with a sensation of tenderness at the joint being manipulated, but this sensation is typically brief and replaced with relief. In some cases, patients may feel a bit sore for 24-48 hours post-adjustment.
No, you do not need to preemptively get imaging done for your first appointment. The vast majority of complaints we see do not require imaging prior to treatment. During your history and examination, we will determine if there are issues that we uncover that may warrant a referral for an X-ray or MRI. However, the majority of our patients safely begin treatment without imaging ahead of time as this is what the current treatment guidelines recommend.
Yes - Chiropractic Physicians are doctors! The state of Florida recognizes them alongside MDs and DOs as physician-level providers, as well as primary care physicians.
The Doctor of Chiropractic (D.C.) degree is given to those who graduate from an accredited chiropractic institution. Schooling is typically 4 years. The first two years of chiropractic school are analogous to medical school, including cadaver lab anatomy and dissection, biochemistry, physiology, pathology, and other basic medical sciences. The last two years are clinically focused and patient-facing, offering students opportunity for clinical rotations in hospitals, outpatient clinics, and qualified teaching practices.
