Each functional neurology treatment method offered at our practice is hand-selected for its potential in reducing pain. We offer a rich blend of both time-tested and cutting-edge therapies and we prescribe a unique treatment track to each patient, based on the individuality of their condition.
Often, the cause of muscular and neurologic pain is rooted in the body’s sensory systems. If the way we perceive the world is skewed, then the brain and motor pathways must dedicate extra work to correcting the discrepancy. This extra stress can manifest as chronic headaches, pain, or other neurologic signs. Utilizing specific therapy to re-train the eyes and balance systems of the body can make a profound difference in pain relief and resolution of odd neurologic symptoms. We utilize some of the latest technological advances in virtual reality and balance therapeutics to induce neuroplasticity at sites of disorder and injury.
Biofeedback therapy empowers patients to gain voluntary control over typically involuntary body functions, such as heart rate, muscle contraction, and brainwaves. Using electronic instruments, biofeedback conveys physiological processes happening in the body that patients are usually unaware of. Clinically, practitioners use it to teach patients self-control of brain functions by showing how their brains react to certain triggers. Over time, patients learn to recognize specific brain states and can then recreate desired states, like relaxation, or avoid undesired states, such as agitation, in their daily lives.
Laser therapy (or photobiomodulation, PBM) offers a safe, painless, and noninvasive treatment for various muscular and neurological conditions. This therapy uses a clinical-grade laser beam that penetrates a few centimeters into the skin, reaching the targeted tissue. The specific wavelength of light (600-980nm) significantly boosts mitochondrial function within the targeted tissue. This combination of the laser’s penetrative capacity and the light’s effect can dramatically reduce healing times for injuries. Researchers have consistently found laser therapy to be one of the most robust and well-studied conservative treatments for muscle, nerve, and brain recovery.
We use electrical nerve stimulation in various ways. While many patients know TENS for muscle pain relief, other forms of nerve stimulation can re-order neuronal firing patterns, treat chronic pain, resolve neuropathies, mitigate neuralgias, and more. We offer several variants of nerve stimulation tailored to individual patient needs.
Spine and joint manipulation offers a specific and gentle way to improve joint function and stimulate the central nervous system. Chiropractic physicians specialize in a “high-velocity-low-amplitude” style of manipulation, which involves a short, quick push. We provide various techniques to achieve superior clinical outcomes and accommodate patient preferences. Manipulation is typically done by hand, and you may hear or feel pops or clicks during the procedure. Additionally, we offer techniques that deliver the same adjustment force but are gentler on the patient.
For thousands of years, people have used acupuncture to manage various conditions, primarily to relieve pain. This technique involves applying needles to specific points on the body. From an Eastern medicine perspective, acupuncture aligns the body’s energy (qi), while a Western perspective focuses on clusters of points that have consistently shown effective treatment outcomes in structured academic studies. At Tampa Bay Functional Neurology, we strive to provide our patients with the best evidence-based blend of these treatment approaches.
Manual therapy encompasses a variety of techniques to treat the musculoskeletal system. Practitioners can address trigger points, muscle tightness, and spasms using their hands or specialized tools. Instrument Assisted Soft Tissue Manipulation (IASTM) employs a surgical-grade steel tool designed to reduce adhesions, increase circulation, and improve range of motion. These therapies go beyond typical massage, focusing on deep tissue treatment for more targeted results.
Therapeutic exercise involves prescribed movements to correct impairments, restore muscular and skeletal function, and maintain well-being. This type of physical activity treats or prevents injuries and improves functional outcomes. Scientific evidence indisputably supports the benefits of exercise, which far outweigh the risks for most adults.
Flexion-distraction therapy targets the soft tissue members of the spine, reducing tension of the ligaments, relieving disc pressure, and expanding the intervertebral foramen, thereby aiding the recovery of damaged spinal nerves and functional recovery of the surrounding structures. It is normally more comfortable for patients than conventional spinal decompression.
Dr. Radford employs a comprehensive approach to neurological treatment, recommending a variety of interventions tailored to each patient’s unique needs. His integrative strategies include the use of herbal medicine to support natural healing processes and reduce inflammation. Dietary and supplemental interventions are also a key component, aiming to optimize nutritional intake and address specific deficiencies that may impact neurological health. Additionally, Dr. Radford advocates for occupational and lifestyle interventions, focusing on improving daily functioning and overall well-being through targeted activities and habit modifications. This holistic approach ensures that every aspect of a patient’s health is considered, promoting sustainable and effective recovery.
